ASCE
Prestandard (DRAFT)
Introduction
The Fiberglass Grating Manufacturers Council (FGMC) of the
American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA) has
developed and prepared this DRAFT of the Fiberglass Grating
Manual. Manufacturers of FRP grating represented on the Council
manufacture fiberglass grating products conforming to the
standards and specifications contained herein.
The purpose of this manual is the publication of consensus
performance standards for fiberglass grating and to define the
standardized testing procedures to be used to assure compliance
of fiberglass grating products to those in this standard. Other
information useful to engineers, architects and other design
professionals include installation recommendations and anchoring
details. This manual contains advisory information only and will
be formerly published by the American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE) after it has been reviewed and approved through a
National concensus standard process under the guidelines of the
American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ASCE and the ACMA
disclaims all liability of any kind for the use, application or
adaptation of materials published in this manual.
Fiberglass grating has been manufactured and used since the
1960’s. It exhibits many superior features (as compared to metal
gratings or wood decks) that are beneficial in a variety of
applications. These features include corrosion and rot
resistance, lightweight, high strength to weight ratio,
electrical and thermal non-conductivity and molded in colors.
Due to the relatively low modulus of elasticity of glass fiber
reinforced polymers, fiberglass grating is always designed based
on the maximum acceptable deflection under load, rather than
based on loads the gratings could actually carry before failure.
This design methodology results in very high real safety
factors.
We appreciate your interest in fiberglass grating system and
look forward to your input and comments on our DRAFT Standard.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Berg, P.E., F.ASCE
Chair, FGMC
